Q: How do I get recruited by college hockey programs?
A: College hockey coaches scout players throughout Junior leagues in the United States and Canada. Prep school leagues, high school leagues, midget leagues, as well as national and regional tournaments are also regularly scouted. You can view a team by team roster breakdown of which amatuer leagues current college players have most recently played in with access to our directory.
NCAA Division I schools have much higher recruiting budgets than other levels of the sport and recruit from the most elite leagues in North America. NCAA Division II, Division III and ACHA programs usually recruit more from leagues within their geographic region.
It is crucial for prospective college hockey players to know where the colleges they aspire to attend are getting their players from. It is also critical for players to take the initiative and reach out to college coaching staffs and begin the relationship building process.
Q: When are college coaches able to make contact with me?
A: College coaches are permitted to send recruiting materials and/or contact you by phone once per month starting June 15 upon completion of your sophomore year in high school. They are allowed to make in person contact beginning July 1 after your Junior year.
Q: When should I begin to contact college coaches?
A: Normally you should start contacting college coaches during your sophmore year in high school. Eventhough they will not be able to contact you yet, it shows you have initiative and interest in the program, while getting your name on their radar screen.
Q: What is an official visit?
A: Official visits are when the college pays all or part of the expenses associated with a recruit and his or her parents trip to the campus. Expenses include your transportation to and from campus, housing, three meals per day and reasonable entertainment expenses including three tickets to a home athletic event. Student athletes are limited to (1) offical visit per school and a maximum of (5) total for NCAA Division I and II schools.
Q: What is an unofficial visit?
A: Unofficial visits are when the student pays for the expenses associated with a college visit. You may make an unlimited number of unofficial visits.
Q: Is a verbal commitment binding?
A: No. Verbal commitments between a student-athlete and a college athletic program are not binding.
Q: What is the National Letter of Intent?
A: The (NLI) is an agreement between a student athlete and college or university stating the student will compete for that schools athletic team for one academic year in exchange for financial aid to the student for one academic year.
This agreement may include restrictions and should be studied in detail.
