Q: When should I begin to apply to colleges?
A: You should begin to apply to colleges in the beginning of your senior year in high school.
Q: How many schools should I apply to?
A: Depends on you preferences. Typically students apply to 6-10 schools. These should be broken down into 3 categories; Reach schools, Probable schools, and Safety schools based on your chances of admission. Use the same categories to create a list of hockey programs based on your chances of making the team, then cross reference both lists.
Q: What is the Common Application?
A: The Common Application is a standard college entrance application used by universities that belong to the Common Application Group. This means these schools will accept this application in place of their own. This can save you time, however some schools will also require you to submit a supplemental application also. To check what schools accept the Common Application visit www.commonapp.org.
Q: How many times should I take the SAT/ACT?
A: Typically students take the SAT in the spring of Junior year and again in fall of Senior year. Only your higest score will be considered by admission offices and you have the option to take the test a third time if you wish.
Q: Should I contact a schools coaching staff before or after I have applied?
A: Both. Many players fail to realize that recruiting is about relationships. The sooner you establish contact with a college coach the more time both sides have to build a relationship. If you are interested in applying to a certain schools you should certainly contact the coach prior to your application to gauge the reality of your chances of making the team. After you have ben accepted you should again make the coaching staff aware if they are not already.
