The NCAA was established in 1906, it stands for National Collegiate Athletic Association and is an organization created to govern and promote the goals of intercollegiate athletics. Members are comprised of colleges, universities and athletic conferences located in the United States.
Responsibilities of the NCAA range from regulation and enforcement of standards, playing rules and eligibility rules that have been established by its members, to organizing and promoting national championship events.
NCAA levels include Division I, II and III in Men's ice hockey and Division I and III in Women's ice hockey.
NCAA Men's Division I is made up of 58 teams in 6 conferences. The 6 conference champions receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The remaining 10 tournaments bids are determined by the NCAA selection committee. NCAA Men's Division I schools are each permitted to offer full or partial ice hockey scholarships not to exceed 18 full scholarships per team.
NCAA Men's Division II has only 7 teams compete at this level. These schools compete against each other and NCAA Division III teams. There is no National Championship held at this level. NCAA DII schools are each permitted to offer full or partial ice hockey scholarships not to exceed 13.5 full scholarships per team.
NCAA Men's Division III consists of 71 teams competing in 8 conferences. 10 teams qualify for the National Tournament. 6 conference champions receive an automatic bid, leaving 4 at large
bids determined by the selection committee. There are no athletic scholarships offered by NCAA Division III schools for men's ice hockey.
NCAA Women's Division I includes 34 teams in 4 conferences. 8 teams qualify for the National Tournament, with 3 conference champions receiving an automatic bid. The reamining 5 teams are determined by the NCAA selection committee. NCAA Women's Division I schools are each permitted to offer full or partial ice hockey scholarships not to exceed 18 full scholarships per team.
NCAA Women's Division III is comprised of 50 teams in 5 conferences. 7 teams qualify for the National Tournament with 4 conference champions receiving an automatic bid. The remaining 3 teams are choosen by the NCAA selection committee. There are no athletic scholarships offered by NCAA Division III schools for women's ice hockey.
