ACHA stands for American Collegiate Hockey Association. Founded in 1991 the ACHA regulates and promotes intercollegiate hockey teams in the United States. Responsibilities of the ACHA include regulating player and team eligibility, rules of play, publishing national rankings and holding national tournaments.
The ACHA Policy and Procedures manual states their Mission and Purpose as follows:
I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) is an organization of College/University affiliate programs which provides structure, regulates operations and promotes the quality of collegiate ice hockey.
II. MISSION STATEMENT
The ACHA's primary mission is to support the growth of collegiate hockey programs nationwide. The ACHA identifies standards which serve to unite and regulate teams at the collegiate level.
The ACHA shall emphasize academic performance, institutional sanction, eligibility criteria, standards of play and opportunities for national competition.
The ACHA promotes all aspects of collegiate hockey stressing the personal development of individual athletes as well as national recognition for member organizations.
ACHA competes at Division I, II and III in Men's ice hockey and Division I and II in Women's ice hockey.
ACHA Men's Division I is comprised of 53 teams. There are 6 Conferences along with Independent teams that compete annualy for the Murdoch Cup awarded to the Men's ACHA Division I National Champion. 16 teams compete in the national tournament. These teams are selected by the National Coaches poll.
ACHA Men's Division II includes 162 teams in 10 Conferences and Independents. These teams are divided into 4 Regions (Northeast, Southeast, Central, West). 16 teams qualify for the national tournament, 4 from each region.
ACHA Men's Division III consists of 140 teams in 10 Conferences and Independents. These teams are also divided into 4 Regions (Atlantic, North, South, Pacific). 16 teams qualify for the national tournament, 4 from each region.
ACHA Women's Division I includes 17 teams playing in 2 Conferences and Independents.
12 teams qualify for the National Tournament.
ACHA Women's Division II includes 29 teams playing in 2 Conferences and Independents.
4 teams qualify for the National tournament.
Players are selected from Men's ACHA schools to represent USA hockey in international competition at the World University Games. This event is held biannually.
